Let’s not kid ourselves – large studios simply have better equipment. Whether you really need it or not remains to be seen. However, with this equipment you often get a little faster to success. Much more important than the expensive equipment is the large selection. And home studios can’t keep up with that. There is a cabinet of microphones for every singer to try out. For every genre, there are different amps and guitars with perfectly matched pickups. Even if this is logically missing in most home studios, you should still pay close attention to the selection of equipment.
I am now particularly specialized in recording voices. From experience I can say that the right choice of microphone is 80% of the mixing. With the perfect microphone for the singer, you pretty much don’t have to do anything. However, if you have the wrong microphone, you can spend hours mixing and still not be satisfied.
That’s why you should definitely test different microphones with the singer. Of course, this can be done excellently in music stores. Some also offer the loan of equipment. With time, you will get a feeling for which microphone suits which singer or instrument.
Yes, you must and can save some recording errors in the mix. However, this should not be the claim. The production should be seen as a whole and not as a kind of chain, where the next possible link tries to hide mistakes.
No plug-in or outboard gear can make up for a bad recording. That’s why you shouldn’t expect a Coldplay production with bad sounding instruments or singers.
This is perhaps the most important point of all those mentioned so far. In principle, it also sums up everything. I often hear from mastering clients: “The mix isn’t that good, but you’ll get it with mastering”. Let’s put it this way, you can get something there. But to deliver a great production, everything has to be just right.
For this reason, you should not carry problems further. The snare already sounds bad during the recording? Then replace it directly, if the possibility exists, or place the mic differently. The compressor is not working properly and the voice is behind the mix, then look for another plugin that fits better.
