Rhythm and Blues (also Rhythm & Blues or Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, abbreviated: R&B, R ‘n’ B or also RnB) refers to the style of African-American popular music that was predominant in the 1940s: a rhythmically strongly accentuated form of the blues that later became Rock ‘n’ Roll, the form of rhythm and blues played and produced by whites. The term rhythm and blues first appeared as a generic term in 1941, following a royalty dispute between the American Copyright Society (ASCAP) and U.S. radio stations, to replace the term race music, which was perceived as discriminatory. Thus, starting in 1949, Billboard magazine titled one of its divisional hit parades Rhythm and Blues. The term is said to have been coined by Jerry Wexler, the journalist at the time and later producer of the Atlantic Records record label. In the American music industry, the term is thus also used to this day as a collective term for African-American mainstream music.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the term underwent a reinterpretation and denoted connections between pop music and soul (Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Prince), and later a connection between pop music and hip-hop. For a more precise differentiation, the terms “Contemporary R&B”, “Rhythm ‘n’ Beat”, “Rap ‘n’ Beat” or “R&B” (exclusively as an abbreviation) are often used for this.
