The music style trap or trap music is a subgenre of hip-hop that developed primarily in the southern states of the United States. There it emerged from styles such as Down South and Crunk, among others. The musical roots of trap date back to the 1990s. In the 2010s, a new variant, more strongly influenced by electronic dance music (EDM), has become popular and internationally known, which is also associated with the name trap. This is also referred to as EDM trap music.
The name “trap” is a slang term. In the US drug scene, it refers to the place where drug deals take place. The term first gained prominence in Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. There, it was used in song lyrics by local Dirty South collectives such as the Dungeon Family, OutKast, and the Goodie Mob in the early 1990s, making it popular. Listeners and critics began referring to rappers whose main lyrical theme was drug trafficking as “trap rappers.” In 2003, Southern rapper T.I. released the commercially successful album Trap Muzik. This became a milestone in the emergence of a new hip-hop subgenre. Rappers with similar musical styles, such as Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Yo Gotti, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne began to enjoy mainstream success. Thus, trap emerged as a recognized musical genre in the mid-2000s.
